FOCUS OF WORK

Active landscape and resource protection is at the center of the Our Nature Park's wide-ranging initiatives for the regional and local containment of the environmental problem of light pollution to protect a naturally dark night landscape.

Based on the European exchange within the framework of the INTERREG Europe NIGHT LIGHT project, the regional festival NIGHT, Light & more was created, which, thanks to the participation of many local, regional, and national partner structures, has produced a wide-ranging program of publicity activities on the topics of night, darkness, and light pollution.

The focus of the newly created area of independent national lighting consultancy serves as a point of contact for administrations, municipalities, private companies and private households for information and technical support in the optimization of outdoor lighting infrastructures. The Nature Park aims to establish itself as a national competence center for lighting technology in the long term.

Objectives for the nature park:

  • Development as a national center of expertise in lighting technology for administrations, municipalities, companies, and private individuals,

  • Initiating, coordinating, implementing, monitoring, and documenting various measures to reduce light pollution and improve the energy efficiency of lighting in the Grand Duchy,

  • Providing professional advice and support and monitoring public and private projects to renovate, optimize and implement lighting infrastructures in accordance with the national guidelines for outdoor lighting,

  • Informing and supporting the various stakeholders in identifying possible funding for measures to be implemented,

  • Advising households on healthy and environmentally friendly indoor and outdoor lighting technologies and energy-efficient technologies,

  • Development of information and awareness-raising materials for various target groups to promote the intelligent use of lighting and avoid light pollution,

  • Contact and mediator for all national players in the field of lighting,

  • Knowledge transfer in the areas of lighting, light pollution and environmental and climate protection.

Measures:

  • Educational campaigns to inform the public and professionals about the negative effects of light pollution and to promote environmentally friendly behavior.

  • Integration of light pollution aspects into municipal land-use planning and urban development to promote environmentally friendly lighting from the outset,

  • Development of lighting master plans or lighting concepts to define clear lighting zones to ensure targeted and needs-based lighting without exposing unwanted areas,

  • Installing outdoor lighting with reduced light pollution that meets the needs of users while protecting the sky,

  • Promoting the use of energy-saving and directional lighting solutions to minimize light spill,

  • Encouraging the use of warm white LEDs instead of cool white LEDs to reduce the blue component in light, which contributes more to light pollution,

  • Promoting research and development of new lighting technologies that are efficient and environmentally friendly,

  • Implementing motion sensors and intelligent lighting systems to activate lighting only when needed,

  • Raising awareness of time-controlled switching off of outdoor lighting during low-traffic periods,

  • Participate in and support dark sky initiatives that work to protect natural night landscapes and reduce light pollution,

  • Introduction of regulations to limit light intensity and emission for public and private lighting.
